Harris Named USBWA Freshman All-America

March 15, 2011

The U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) announced its first-ever Freshman All-America Team Tuesday, and Tennessee forward Tobias Harris was included on the 10-man squad. A native of Dix Hills, N.Y., Harris averages 15.2 points and 7.3 rebounds this season and has posted eight double-doubles.

Tennessee's second-leading scorer, rebounder and shot-blocker this season, Harris averaged a league-best 22.5 points in last week's SEC Tournament in Atlanta.

Among all freshmen in the six "major" conferences, Harris ranks fourth in scoring and sixth in rebounding (one of only three freshmen to rank in the top five in each category).

Previous honors for Harris this season include three separate SEC Freshman of the Week awards, SI.com "Freshmen Who Fit" Team (captain), NIT Season Tip-Off All-Tournament Team, SEC All-Freshman Team and second-team All-SEC (coaches) honors.

Harris' most recent honor is particularly historic for the Tennessee basketball program, as no Vol has ever previously made a Freshman All-America Team--though Bernard King did earn regular first-team All-America status from Helms Athletic Foundation as a freshman in 1974-75.

Harris and the ninth-seeded Vols begin NCAA Tournament play Friday in Charlotte, N.C., with a second-round matchup against eighth-seeded Michigan (12:40 p.m. ET, TruTV).
