Richardson Returns Home After 6-0 Tour with AIA
Rising sophomore basketball player Josh Richardson completed his trip to Europe With Athletes in Action and returned to the United States this past weekend.
He and his AIA teammates, a collection of active NCAA Division I student-athletes from various schools, posted a perfect 6-0 record during their 10-day tour across Poland and Germany.
Athletes in Action recorded an 81-75 triumph in their final contest, which was played against a collection of German professional players.
Now enjoying a few days at home with his family in Edmond, Okla., Richardson returns to Knoxville this weekend to rejoin his UT teammates. He recently visited with UTsports.com over the phone to share some thoughts on his first trip abroad.
"It was a great experience," Richardson said. "Not only working on my game, getting better at basketball, but I also got closer to God and feel a lot more confident in my Christian walk.
"I saw castles for the first time, I went to the Tigris River and I also saw the Berlin Wall. (The Auschwitz concentration camp) was really eye-opening. I didn't know people were actually treated that bad. It made me that much more grateful for how good I have it and how I live.
"As far as basketball, I think my decision-making got better, playing against pro guys. I learned how to keep a better attitude on the court and play through adversity."
Despite thoroughly enjoying and appreciating his European experience, there was one aspect of being away from home that was difficult to bear.
"I didn't get to watch any of the (NBA) playoff games, which you know hurts my soul because my team (Oklahoma City) was winning. I also missed some simple things like hamburgers and Mexican food - there's none of that over there."
