In what has become a Tennessee basketball tradition, UT's men's and women's teams dished out assists Saturday to the Down Syndrome Awareness Group of East Tennessee for the sixth annual Hoops For Hope event at Farragut High School.

Tennessee student-athletes spent the morning playing basketball alongside children and young adults with Down Syndrome.

"We have parents tell us that for the young person or adult in their family, this is the highlight of their year," Hoops for Hope representative David Sexton said. "This is the event that is marked on their calendar and they plan around for the whole year."

The energy in the gym is contagious each summer. From the starting lineup introductions to the cheers after each basket, participants get the full experience of competing in a basketball game.

"This is so much fun," Lady Vols junior Ariel Massengale said. "This is my favorite community service event that we do all season long. Just seeing these kids puts a smile on your face."

Vols senior Jeronne Maymon even got on the microphone and MC'd the event.

"It is indescribable," Vols junior Josh Richardson said of the feeling he gets when he sees a participant make a basket. "It is just a rush. It makes you want to go do backflips."
