Tennessee Basketball Announces All-Century Team
Photos of the All-Century Team
The University of Tennessee basketball program today announced the 20-man All-Century Team which will be honored as part of the "100 Year Celebration and Alumni Reception." The official announcement ended a season long celebration that also relived the "Greatest Shots" in Tennessee basketball history.
"The history of Tennessee basketball is full of student-athletes and coaches who helped shape what we know today," said Bruce Pearl, men's head basketball coach. "I think this group of men that have been selected to the All-Century Team really do characterize a century of great Tennessee basketball. On behalf of all those men I have followed as a coach let me say how proud we are and that it is great to be a Tennessee Vol."
Fans had the opportunity to vote for their favorite players all season and the top 10 vote-getters were automatic selections to the team.
An All-Century Team Selection Committee was formed to further deliberate on the additional members of the All-Century team. The Committee's deliberation took the fan vote into consideration, along with career statistics, player and team accomplishments, and the respective eras of Tennessee basketball. The 20-man All-Century team is listed below.
The All-Century Team will be honored during halftime of Tennessee's match-up against Vanderbilt tomorrow. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
Inside the Numbers of the All-Century Team . . .
During halftime of this afternoon's game, Tennessee will honor its All-Century Team. Here are some interesting facts and figures that relate to this elite collection of former Vol greats:
- Tennessee racked up 891 total wins during the respective careers of the 20 All-Century Team members (more than 62 percent of the program s all-time victories).
- The 20 men represented on the All-Century Team combined to account for 31,482 total points while wearing the Orange & White, and they also combined to average 16.5 points per game during their respective collegiate careers.
- Members of the All-Century Team had a hand in bringing six Southeastern Conference regular-season championships, three SEC Eastern Division crowns and two SEC Tournament titles to Rocky Top.
- Two Academic All-America honorees (Billy Justus and Mike Edwards) are represented on the All-Century Team, and the All-Century Team combined to garner five Academic All-SEC certificates.
- The 20 members of the All-Century team played a role in 34 Tennessee wins over Kentucky and 62 victories over Vanderbilt.
- The tenures of nine different UT head coaches are represented on the All-Century Team, with Ray Mears having coached the most All-Century honorees (6). Other coaches who roamed the Tennessee sideline during the career of at least one All-Century Team member are Emmett Lowery (4), Buzz Peterson (4), Don DeVoe (3), Bruce Pearl (3), John Mauer (2), Jerry Green (1), Wade Houston (1) and Cliff Wettig (1).
- 75 total seasons of NBA or ABA playing experience are represented on the All-Century Team.
