The game began the Vols' long string of postseason encounters. The Vols' second trip to New York was better than their first. Seven years earlier, the Vols had lost to Army 41-0 at West Point. Hickman's sensational defensive play earned him a spot on Grantland Rice's 1931 All-America team.

EDITOR'S NOTE: There was a series of postseason games scheduled during the Great Depression (principally in 1931) for the purpose of raising money for relief of the unemployed in response to the President's Committee on Mobilization of Relief Resources. There were estimated to be 100 games played nationwide. Most notable among these postseason games were the Tennessee-NYU game of 1931 and the Army-Navy games of 1930 and 1931. All three games were played in Yankee Stadium before huge crowds. The NCAA does not recognize the games in the All-Time Bowl Game records. |
