ATLANTA (Dec. 31, 2009) - In head coach Lane Kiffin's first bowl game at Tennessee, the Volunteers made it tough for Virginia Tech for a half, but eventually fell to the No. 11 team in the land, 37-14. After falling behind 14-0 after the first quarter, the Vols made a valient effort to tie the game as Montario Hardesty scored from four yards out and Denarius Moore caught a two-yard touchdown pass from Jonathan Crompton with 18 seconds in the second stanza. A deep pass from Tyrod Taylor to Jarrett Boykin with nine seconds left in the half set up a 21-yard field goal by Matt Waldron as the Hokies took a 17-14 lead. Virginia Tech dominated the second half, outscoring the Vols 20-0 with a touchdown in the third and 13 more in the fourth. Tennessee ventured into Tech territory only two times in the second half, reaching no closer than the 33 yardline. Linebacker Herman Lathers had a career night with a game-high 12 tackles and 1 1/2 tackles for loss to lead UT.
