Lucas Taylor's 2-yard touchdown reception on a perfectly-timed fade pass from Jonathan Crompton in the final minute lifted the White team to a 16-13 spring game victory over the Orange Saturday in Knoxville. The 47th annual Edamerica Orange and White Game now stands 23-21-3 in favor of the Orange.
Crompton completed his final three passes on the afternoon, hitting Austin Rogers twice for gains of 17 and nine yards to set up the winning score. The white team drove 46 yards in four plays, keyed by a 23-yard run from Roy Olasimbo. Crompton finished 13-of-26 passing for 113 yards and an interception in addition to his touchdown.
"I want to thank the fans for a great day," head coach Phillip Fulmer said of the crowd of 17,409 at Neyland Stadium. "Just to put a synopsis on the spring, I think it was productive. It's always difficult when you start trying to replace guys who were first-rounders or first-day draftable guys, fifth-year seniors who have played very well for you. That's everybody's challenge every year."
LaMarcus Coker scored the game's first touchdown, a 1-yarder midway through the first period. Coker finished with 35 rushing yards on a game-high 14 attempts, while Arian Foster added 63 yards and Montario Hardesty 29.
Olasimbo was the rushing leader with 114 yards on just seven carries, including a 75-yard scamper midway through the fourth quarter.
"You saw Roy Olasimbo," Fulmer said. "He's kind of our ace in the hole. He a senior walk-on and it's a shame he doesn't have more time left. I do think he will help us this year. He's a big strong tough guy and just a wonderful young man."
The White team trailed 13-3 in the final minutes of the third quarter before rallying.
Freshman Tyler Wolf sparked the comeback with a 73-yard interception return and score just six seconds before the quarter break. Other interceptions in the game were by Ja'Kouri Williams, who recently moved to defensive back from offense, and Jarod Parrish, who capped a brilliant spring.
"Jarod Parrish is an amazing guy," Fulmer said. "He has hung around here and played a little bit for us and now all of a sudden he's making plays and in the right place to intercept balls and that's a good thing."
Brett Barnes was the game's tackle leader with 13, while redshirt freshman LaMarcus Thompson added to his fine play this spring with eight stops. Antonio Reynolds added a sack and a fumble recovery.
"I'm really happy with what Antonio Reynolds has gotten done this spring along with Xavier Mitchell," Fulmer said. "Again, that's two seniors who have played a lot of football for us but we needed their example."
Demonte' Bolden left the field on a stretcher after sustaining a late-game neck injury. He was taken to UT Medical Center as a precautionary measure, but all exams were negative and Bolden was released early Saturday evening. Bolden was the only injury reported from the game by head athletic trainer Jason McVeigh.
