NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - Tennessee junior linebacker AJ Johnson has been named to the 2013 Lott IMPACT Trophy Watch List as announced Thursday at the Pacific Club in Newport Beach.
Johnson is one of 42 student-athletes from 37 different colleges around the country to earn the honor.
Each player nominated has made the biggest IMPACT on their teams both on and off the field. IMPACT stands for Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity.
Johnson, a 2012 All-SEC linebacker, finished the season fourth in the NCAA in tackles and tackles per game with 138 for 11.5 per game leading the SEC in tackles in his 12 starts.
A leader in the middle linebacker role, Johnson also had team-high 8.5 TFLs for 25 yards along with his first-career sack and eight quarterback hurries. He posted the most tackles by a Vol since Jerod Mayo made 140 in 2007 while his 75 assisted tackles are the third-most in a season at UT.
Johnson averaged 12.9 tackles over the last 10 games of the season with at least 11 tackles in each game.
On the offensive side of things, Johnson rushed 12 times for 21 yards with team-high six touchdowns out of `The Beast' a Wildcat QB formation.
Voting for the award is held throughout the season by a National Voter Panel of former college coaches and players, select members of the media, past winners of the award and the Board of Directors of the Pacific Club IMPACT Foundation, the sponsors of the award.
There are 20 linebackers, 14 defensive backs and eight defensive linemen on the list.
The 10th annual Lott IMPACT Trophy Black-Tie Awards Banquet will be Dec. 8 at the Pacific Club in Newport Beach.
