June 14, 2012

Timber Tops
#78
PLAYER SPOTLIGHT
Antone Davis
Offensive Line (1987-90)

Manning the outside of a highly touted offensive line, Antone Davis was rewarded for his time in the trenches, receiving All-America status his senior year. He was also given the Jacobs Trophy as the SEC's top blocker in 1990. Davis helped create the holes for tailback Tony Thompson in 1990, allowing Thompson to rush for 248 yards against Mississippi State and 236 against Vanderbilt. Thompson went on to gain 1,261 yards on the season thanks to Davis and the line.

WHY I WORE THE NUMBER
Tim Irwin
Offensive Line (1977-80)
"I wore number 78 because that's what they assigned me as a freshman. I was in school in 1978 so Johnny Watts (19) and I got some cover time that year because our numbers made 1978. The first real publicity I recieved as a Vol was because I wore this number."
WHY I WORE THE NUMBER
Elliott Gammage
Offensive Line (1965-67)
"I wore 78 because that was the number they gave me. I was just happy to get a number!"
