He earned consensus All-America honors in 2004 after posting 55 intimidation blocks in just nine games played due to injury. He started 46 games in his career and was twice elected a team captain. In 2003, he and teammate Kevin Burnett were named the first junior captains in 59 years. Off the field, he was a 2004 National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete and earned the Draddy Trophy as the nation's top scholar-athlete. WHY I WORE THE NUMBER
Lebron "Cooter" Shields
Offensive Line (1955-59)
"I was assigned number 77 by the equipment manager Lonnie "The Chicken Fighter" Carpenter because he felt I could only remember one number. I was fortunate to play with the Baltimore Colts, 1960, but 77 was taken by Gene "Big Daddy" Lipscomb. I was able to retain my 77 when I was picked by the Minnesota Vikings from a player pool in 1961."
WHY I WORE THE NUMBER
Chris Wampler
Defensive Tackle (1979-82)
"According to the bible, seven was the perfect number so I wanted two of them just in case one was not enough. Number 77 was special to me because it was my first number in High School. My favorite thing about wearing number 77 was that the double numbers were easy for fans to recognize and relate to for some reason. When they couldn't remember your name, they remembered your matching numbers."
