Vols Jersey Countdown #71

June 21, 2012

Timber Tops
#71
PLAYER SPOTLIGHT
Darris McCord
Tackle (1952-54)

The only Tennessee player to ever earn All-America honors while wearing number 71, Darris McCord captained the 1954 squad that went 4-6 under second-year head coach Harvey Robinson. The tackle played on both the offensive and defensive lines after Robinson switched back to the old two-way player system. Robinson looked for leadership from McCord, and found it in a steady blocker on the offensive end and a brute tackler in contrast. His hard work and grit earned him All-American status from the Football Writers Association of America in 1954 before embarking on 13-year NFL career with the Detroit Lions.

WHY I WORE THE NUMBER
Brent Beavers
Defensive Line (1997)
"I wore the number 71 because it is the number that was assigned to me by the staff. I actually wore this number for a few weeks during my high school senior season in Tazewell, Virginia. Number 71 is now a permanent part of my life. GO VOLS!"
