Vols Jersey Countdown #48

July 14, 2013

Player Spotlight
Beattie Feathers
Back (1931-33)

Many consider Beattie Feathers to rank among the greatest to ever grace the field at Tennessee. And rightfully so, considering the mark he left on the Vols' program.

In 1933, Feathers sealed his place in Tennessee history, being named the Southeastern Conference MVP. He was an All-American in 1933, capping his glorious backfield career on The Hill in which the Vols had two undefeated seasons and went 25-3-2 overall.

It propelled him to professional greatness in which he became the first NFL player to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a single season, averaging a record 9.9 yards per carry. He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1955. Feathers passed away on March 10, 1979 at the age of 69.
