Vols Jersey Countdown #18

Aug 13, 2013

Player Spotlight
Dale Carter
Defensive Back (1990-91)

Dale Carter came to Tennessee to be a playmaker, and he did just that. In two seasons with the Vols, Carter earned All-America status each year and garnered national recognition as a sticky defensive back and an explosive kick return man. He is the only Vol to be named an All-American while wearing the number 18.

It was his kick-return capabilities that sealed his All-America status in 1990 as he led the nation with 507 yards on 17 returns for an average of 29.82 yards per return. Carter also returned 29 punts for 381 yards, a 13.1-yard average.

His senior year, Carter was one of three final candidates for the Thorpe Award given to the nation's top defensive back.

Why I Wore the Number
Jason Croom
Wide Receiver (2012-Pres.)
"I wear number 18 because when I started playing football, Randy Moss was one of my idols that I always watched. I saw him with that number when he was with the Raiders and I ended up keeping it when he switched it."

Why I Wore the Number
Ken Waddell
Wing Back (1959-60)
"I wore number 18 for the Vols in 1959 and 1960. I played wingback and defensive back. Since wingbacks had to pick a number in the teens, I just picked 18. It was orange and white and that was what mattered to me."
