No Excuses for Vols in Final Preseason Scrimmage
UT coach Lane Kiffin

The Tennessee football team worked out for nearly three hours Thursday in preparation for its final full-scale scrimmage of the season, splitting time between Haslam Field and the Neyland-Thompson Sports Center due to inclement weather.

Tennessee head coach Lane Kiffin said that his Vols were sharp in their last tune-up before Saturday, which the coaching staff has deemed the most important day of practice thus far for settling a very jumbled and ever-evolving depth chart.

The Vols will treat Friday and Saturday as a dry run for the Western Kentucky weekend, walking through on Friday afternoon and scrimmaging Saturday at 12:21 p.m. ET inside Neyland Stadium.

"This will be more important than anything they have done," Kiffin said. "Having the day off tomorrow besides our walk through, there will be no excuse for not having fresh legs. We're not going to install something on them at the last minute, just like we wouldn't for a game. They'll have no excuses not to perform to the best of their ability."

Quarterbacks Jonathan Crompton and Nick Stephens--waging the most talked about position battle of fall camp--may see the winner of their duel determined based on little more than game management.

"I will be off the field; all of our coaches will be off the field," Kiffin said. "They have to manage the huddle and the offense. That will be a challenge for them, doing it without any assistance.

"This is a pretty big terminology offense. In the end, a lot of times, decisions have been made based on the quarterback who makes the smarter decisions. It will be great to see Saturday."

Tennessee kicks off the 2009 season for real on Sept. 5 at home vs. Western Kentucky.

STUDENTS INVITED TO ATTEND SATURDAY SCRIMMAGE

Head coach Lane Kiffin wants to add a touch of the home game atmosphere to his team's final preseason scrimmage by inviting all UT students to attend.

Gates 1, 2 and 3 will open at 12:00 p.m. The scrimmage begins at 12:21 p.m.
