Oct. 21, 2009

Tennessee's Eric Berry was named Wednesday to the Sporting News Midseason All-America team, one day after his selection as a quarterfinalist for the Lott Trophy.

Berry made the Sporting News end-of-season All-America squad last year as part of his string of unanimous All-America selections. He also was a semifinalist for the Lott Trophy, presented to the nation's top defensive player.

Berry leads the 2009 Vols in passes defensed (five), special teams tackles (seven) and fumble return yards (46), while ranking second on the team in both tackles (50) and tackles for loss (4.5). He also had an interception against Florida.

The semifinalists will be announced Nov. 3 and the four finalists Nov. 24. Those four finalists will be flown to Newport Beach for the annual black-tie banquet televised by FOX Sports West.

Other SEC players on the Sporting News midseason team are Alabama's Terrence Cody, Mark Ingram, Mike Johnson and Rolando McClain; Florida's Joe Haden, Maurkice Pouncey and Brandon Spikes; Georgia's Drew Butler; and South Carolina's Eric Norwood.
