CHICAGO - Tennessee freshman wide receiver Marquez North's one-handed catch on the game-winning drive against South Carolina Oct. 19 is nominated for the GEICO Play of the Year, Intersport announced Tuesday. Each week, fans vote for the GEICO Play of the Year and the winner will be announced on GEICO Best of College Football 2013 on CBS Nov. 29 at 1:30 p.m. ET.
Each week for eight weeks, four incredible college football plays will be nominated as the Play of the Year on the GEICO Best of College Football Facebook page (facebook.com/bestofcollegefootball). The eight weekly winners will then faceoff in a week of finals voting from November 4 through 11 to determine the 2013 GEICO Play of the Year.
Late in the fourth quarter with the Vols trailing 21-20, Tennessee quarterback Justin Worley connected with North, who made a spectacular one-handed grab with his left hand, on a 39-yard passing play, bringing the Vols into field goal range. Kicker Michael Palardy would send it through the uprights from 19 yards out as time expired, locking up the upset over the nationally-ranked Gamecocks.
North's catch is competing against three other plays from week eight, including a fake-field goal touchdown run by Vanderbilt's Carey Spear, a one-handed touchdown catch from Stanford's Kodi Whitfield and a 24-yard touchdown reception by Brockport's Eric Malave.
