Jonathan Wade strengthened his standing as one of the league's top cornerbacks Saturday with three drive-stopping plays in Tennessee's 31-24 win at South Carolina. For his efforts, he was named Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
The senior from Shreveport, La., broke up a pass on the game's second play that deflected into the hands of teammate Marvin Mitchell, who returned the interception 17 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead. On the Gamecocks' next series, Wade intercepted a pass of his own in the end zone to prevent a tying score. Finally, Wade's fourth-down tackle for a two-yard loss stopped yet another Carolina drive as Tennessee improved to 7-1 overall and 3-1 in the SEC.
Wade had two pass breakups to go with his interception and leads the league with 13 passes defensed in eight games. His 1.63 passes defensed average ties for third in Division I-A.
