Now in his 17th year, Joe Whitney oversees the provision of mental training services to all UT athletes and teams.
A 1982 graduate of Springfield College, he coached basketball and football in New York City for 13 years before leaving the coaching profession to pursue graduate study in sport psychology. Dr. Whitney obtained a master's from the University of Virginia in 1997 and a Ph.D. from Tennessee in 2000. He served as a graduate assistant and sport psychology consultant at UT before being named director of mental training in January 2002.
Dr. Whitney and his wife, Laura, have one daughter, Samantha.
