GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The Tennessee men's golf team fired a 290-301-591 during the first day of play at the Suntrust Gator Invitational to stand in 10th place. The tournament is being held at the University Golf Course (par 70, 6,701 yards).
Leading the way for the 21st-ranked Vols is senior Ross McGowan in a tie for 17th. McGowan opened the tournament with a 69 during the first round to go with a 76 in the second for a total of 145.
Standing second in UT scoring is fellow senior David Skinns in a tie for 22nd. Skinns fired a 74 during the first round, but improved his scoring by two in the second with a 72 for a total of 146.
Freshman Philip Pettitt is one stroke back of Skinns in a tie for 25th with a 73-74-147. Rounding out the Vol scoring is freshman Ben Spickard in a tie for 56th with a 74-79-153 and sophomore Tino Weiss in 77th place with an 85-80-165.
Leading the tournament is No. 6 Wake Forest with a 286-291-577. UAB and host Florida stand tied for second with scores of 578. South Carolina is fourth with a 583, while Florida State and LSU round out the top five in a tie for fifth with scores of 583.
Other Golfweek Top 25 teams competing in the tournament include No. 18 Georgia State in eighth with a 586, No. 24 Georgia Southern in ninth with a 588, No. 25 Purdue in 10th with a 597 and No. 9 Kentucky in a tie for 13th with a 604.
Heath West of LSU and Brett Stegmaier of Florida are tied for the individual lead. West has a scorecard of 69-71-140, while Stegmaier has a 72-68-140.
The Vols return to action Sunday with the final round of play.
