Davidson, N.C. -- Neither ran, nor sleet, nor snow shall keep the Tennessee men's golf team from competing for a championship. After participating in three straight tournament altered by weather, the Vols have grown accustomed to battling the elements. The Davidson College Invitational has been no different.

On Monday, tournament host Davidson shortened the two-day event to 36 holes due to cold weather. The change in plans did not faze the Big Orange. Tennessee will enter the final round in first place with an 11 stroke lead over the competition. The Vols carded a first round 293 (+5) which consisted of 16 birdies.

The Volunteers were led by sophomore Oliver Goss. The Australian currently leads the Davidson Invitational after a first round 71 (-1). Goss recorded five birdies during his 18 holes.

"One under was a respectable score today considering the conditions," Goss said. "The conditions made the course quite difficult. It was windy and very cold so I'm pleased with my score today. I actually didn't hit the ball very well, but my course strategy saved me today.

"It's going to be even colder tomorrow so the team just needs to stay tough and patient tomorrow to increase our lead and get the win for Tennessee."

Senior Marshall Talkington is right on Goss' heels as he is in second place after shooting a season best 73 (+1).

"The conditions were tough today so I'm happy with my score," Talkington said. "I didn't hit the ball my best but my short game kept me in it."

Two other Volunteers, Danny Keddie and Chad Merzbacher, are also in line for a top-ten finish at the River Run Country Club course. Keddie is tied for fourth after carding 74 (+2) and Merzbacher is tied for eighth after shooting 75 (+3).

Rounding out the UT lineup, freshman Jack Smith is tied for 18th with a first round 77 (+5). Meanwhile, sophomore Mike Nagy shot 81 (+9) as an individual in his first tournament action of the season.

On Tuesday, Tennessee will look to capture its first championship of the season when the final round gets underway at 10 a.m. (ET).
