Vols Finish Ninth at Schenkel/ E-Z-GO Invitational

STATESBORO, Ga.-- The fifth-ranked Tennessee men's golf team finished ninth at the 2002 Schenkel/E-Z-GO Invitational, which was played at Forest Heights Country Club (par 72 6,945 yards). The Vols finished with a three-round scorecard of 292-288-300--880.

Freshman Ross McGowan led the way for the Volunteers. McGowan finished tied for 12th with scores of 72-71-75--218. Fellow freshman David Skinns finished in 20th-t with a 74-74-71--219. Other Vol scores included junior Andrew Pratt (29th-t) with a 221, senior Andrew Black (62nd-t) with a 228 and junior Ian Parnaby (68th) with a 231.

Augusta State, ranked No. 18 in the nation, won the tournament with scores of 284-285-296--865. Finishing in second was third-ranked Wake Forest with a 288-285-294--867. N.C. State (871), No. 4 Florida (872) and No. 14 Georgia (874) rounded out the top five teams of the tournament. Other top 25 finishers included No. 2 Clemson (876) tying for sixth, No. 11 Washington (886) in 11th and No. 10 Auburn (893) in 13th.

Justin Walters of N.C. State was the individual medalist of the tournament. Walters fired scores of 68-72-67--207 to win by five strokes over Bryant Odom (212) of Georgia. Michael Webb and Oliver Wilson, both of Augusta State finished tied for third with scores of 214, while D.J. Trahan of Clemson and Ari Savolainen and Camilo Villegas of Florida finished tied for fifth with scores of 215.

The Vols can next be seen in action at the Augusta State Invitational from April 6-7 at Forest Hills Country Club in Augusta, Ga. The Vols competed in this tournament last year, finishing eighth with a three-round score of 872.
