Vols Finish Tied For Ninth at Rain-Shortened Courtyard By Marriott Intercollegiate

HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. -- The Tennessee men's golf team fired a 287-293--580 to finish tied for ninth at the rain-shortened Courtyard by Marriott Intercollegiate. The tournament, which concluded regular season play for the Vols, was played at Devils Ridge Golf Club (par 72, 7,002 yards).

Ross McGowan led the way for the Big Orange with a scorecard of 71-69--140 to finish tied for eighth, which was his third consecutive top-10 finish of the year and fourth overall. McGowan's final round saw him record a birdie and bogey to open play at the fourth hole. From there he would record birdies on holes six, seven and nine to go 3-under-par. He recorded another birdie on 13 before parring the remaining eight holes to close out the round.

Next for Tennessee was a resurgent David Skinns with a 75-68--143, tying him for 20th. Skinns, a senior, improved his score by seven strokes from the first round to the second. He opened play on the fifth hole with consecutive birdies. He would then record three more birdies on holes 11 through 12 to go 5-under-par. Following a bogey on 17 he returned to 5-under-par on 18 before a bogey on No. 2. He would then par the remaining two holes to finish.

Next for Tennessee was junior Lloyd Campbell in a tie for 55th with a 69-80--149. Campbell was never able to get on track as he carded two birdies, two bogeys, a double bogey and two triple bogeys. Freshman Philip Pettitt was next in Vol scoring. Pettitt finished one stroke back of Campbell with a 72-78--150, tying him for 58th. Pettitt's round saw him record one birdie and seven bogeys.

Rounding out the UT contingent was senior John Scott Rattan. Rattan ended the tournament with a scorecard of 80-78--158 to place 78th. His scorecard read two birdies, six bogeys and a double bogey.

 

 

The 12th-ranked Duke Blue Devils took top tournament honors with a scorecard of 280-280--560. Finishing tied for second was No. 19 Wake Forest with a 279-282--561 and No. 15 Georgia Southern with a 273-288--561.

Aron Price of Georgia Southern took individual medallist honors with a 64-66--130. Taylor Crosby of North Carolina State and Michael Schachner of Duke tied for second with two-round scores of 136.

The Vols now set their sights on post season play and the SEC Championships at the Seaside Course in Sea Island, Ga. The tournament runs April 15-17.
