David Skinns shakes hands with Georgia's Richard Scott after claiming the individual title.

April 17, 2005

SEA ISLAND, Ga. -- Tennessee's David Skinns claimed the SEC individual golf championship at the Sea Island Golf Club's Seaside Course with a scorecard of 72-70-68--210. Skinns became the first Vol since Mike Sposa in 1990 to win this individual honor. As a team the 16th-ranked Vols finished fifth with a scorecard of 298-298-293--889.

Skinns started the day in a tie for second with Gator Todd of Alabama, but over took round-two leader Richard Scott of Georgia to claim top honors. He opened the round down one stroke, but came back with three birdies on holes six through eight to enter the back nine at 2-under-par, while Scott was at even-par. After a bogey on No. 12, Skinns came back with three-straight birdies on Nos. 13-15 to go 4-under-par for the round. He bogeyed 17 and 18, but held on to win the title by one stroke over Scott.

Skinns is the fourth golfer in Tennessee history to win the individual championship. Bert Greene first did it back in 1964, while Mickey Mabry won in 1972 and Sposa in 1990.

Next for the Vols was freshman Philip Pettitt in a tie for 14th with scores of 71-78-73--222. Pettitt opened the final round with a bogey on the third hole, but returned to even par with a birdie on seven. He slipped with bogeys on holes 11 through 13, but came back with another birdie on No. 14. He carded a bogey on 17, but finished out the tournament with a par on 18.

Senior Ross McGowan was third in Vol scoring with a 74-73-79--226, tying him for 20th. McGowan could not get on track for the round, turning in a scorecard that included two birdies, four bogeys, two double bogeys and a triple bogey.

Rounding out the Tennessee contingent were junior Lloyd Campbell and freshman Charlie Ford. Campbell finished the tournament with an 81-77-77--235 to tie for 48th, while Ford fired an 81-81-75--237, tying him for 51st.

Campbell's round saw him card a 2-over-par 37 on the front nine, but slipped on the back nine with a 5-over-par 40. Ford bettered his play by six strokes with a 75. His round included two birdies and seven bogeys.

Winning the tournament was 18th-ranked Kentucky with a 290-302-283--875. Finishing two strokes back was No. 7 Auburn (887), while No. 2 Georgia (883) was third. The sixth-ranked Florida Gators (888) finished fourth while Tennessee rounded out the top five.

Finishing second to Skinns in the individual portion of the tournament was Richard Scott of Georgia with a 68-73-70--211. John Holmes of Kentucky rounded out the top three in third with a 69-75-71--215.

Tennessee now awaits its destination for one of three NCAA regionals, May 19-21. The regional sites are the Golf Club of Tennessee in Nashville for the East Regional, Notre Dame's Warren Golf Course in South Bend, Ind., for the Central Regional and the Stanford University Golf Course in Palo Alto, Calif., for the West Regional.
