ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. -- On Sunday, the Tennessee men's golf team was unable to mount any sort of comeback after posting a solid second round score of 293. The Vols finished the SEC Championship in 14th place after carding a tournament total of 299-293-303--895 (+55).

Tennessee's bright spot of the tournament came from its two freshmen Oliver Goss and Chad Merzbacher. Both finished 1-2 in the Vols SEC Championship standings.

Goss continued his streak of five consecutive tournament finishing atop the Vols team leaderboard. At Sea Island Golf Club, Goss carded a 72-73-74--219 (+9) while hitting three birdies. The All-SEC Freshman candidate finished the tournament tied for 23rd.

Merzbacher also stepped up big for head coach Jim Kelson. Merzbacher finished tied for 47th after carding rounds of 75-73-76--224 (+14) including six birdies. After only competing in two team contests all year, Merzbacher made the most of his opportunity at the SEC Championship.

The Vols saw contributions from seniors Jay Vandeventer and Rick Lamb. The lone Vol seniors completed their last SEC Championship by competing until the very end. Vandeventer carding a weekend total of 75-74-76--225 (+15) and finished tied for 50th. Lamb finished tied for 59th after totaling a 78-73-77--228 (+18). Newcomer Thomas Dunne rounded out the Vols tournament team by carding a 77-74-77--228 (+18) and finishing tied for 59th.

The Alabama men's golf team captured their second consecutive SEC Men's Golf Championship. The Crimson Tide managed windy conditions to score a final round of 290 (+10) to edge South Carolina. Alabama, the second ranked team in the country, finished the championship with a three-day total of 848 (+8).

Sebastian Cappelen of Arkansas won individual medalist honors by shooting a final-round 66 to finish eight-under-par 69-67-66--202 (-8) for the championship. Cappelen's total score of 202 is a 54-hole SEC Championship record. He was the only player in the field to shoot under par each day and only recorded two bogeys for the entire tournament.
