Tennessee landed top-10 individual finishes from Rick Lamb and Garrick Porteous but fell to eighth place in the final team standings at the 2012 SEC Men's Golf Championship.
Porteous and Lamb were Tennessee's top two scorers each of the three days at Sea Island Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Ga.
Porteous on Sunday finished strong en route to a 2-under-par 68 that lifted him to a tie for seventh place at 1-under 209. Lamb, meanwhile, suffered a rough start that eliminated his chance at tournament medalist honors. He closed with a 3-over 73 to wind up alone in sixth at 3-under 207.
The Vols combined for a final-round score 13-over-par 293 to finish at 28-over 868. Sunday's numbers for the rest of the team had Jay Vandeventer and Danny Keddie with matching 76s, and Brandon Rodgers with 77.
Alabama coasted to the team championship thanks to top-two individual placements by Justin Thomas (203) and Bobby Wyatt (205). The Crimson Tide finished at 12-under-par 828 to stave off Auburn at 834. Florida (841), Georgia (850), Arkansas (855), Mississippi (857) and Kentucky (866) placed ahead of the 44th-ranked Vols.
Porteous birdied Nos. 5 and 6 and then eagled the par-5 seventh hole to return to red figures for the first time since early in Saturday's second round. His scorecard read 37-31, and this weekend marked the fifth top-10 finish of the season for the All-SEC candidate and his third in succession.
Lamb missed his chance at a second straight tournament championship but still turned in one of his finest collegiate performances. The junior bogeyed four of his first five holes Sunday but then settled down to play the last 13 holes in 1 under par for a 39-34 card. Lamb covered the entire 54 holes without any score worse than bogey.
Vandeventer carded a single birdie Sunday for the second day in a row against five bogeys and then a double at his next-to-last hole. The junior shot 36-40 and finished in 51st place at 15-over-par 225.
Keddie registered two birdies to help offset eight bogeys — six on his first nine. Keddie's card for the day read 40-36 and the sophomore finished in a tie for 54th place at 20-over 230.
Rodgers shaved five strokes off his Saturday result thanks in part to three birdies, his high for the weekend. The sophomore posted a 41-36 scorecard and finished in a tie for 58th place at 23-over 233.
Tennessee awaits its destination for the May 17-19 NCAA Regionals. The selection announcement is set for May 7 at 6 p.m.
