KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee men's golf team got off to a hot start and never cooled off Monday, setting a Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions record for lowest two round score with 546, to take an 18-stroke lead into the final round.
Senior Lloyd Campbell leads the TOC after two rounds with a nine-under-par 133. Campbell's 133 breaks the previous Vol record low of 134 for two rounds by Boomer Erick in 1994. His score ties with Jonas Blixt of Sweden for the lowest two-round score ever in the TOC. Campbell opened the first round with a 66 and recorded a 67 in the second round.
Sophomores Jonathan Mount and Philip Pettitt were next for the Vols with each
shooting a seven-under-par 135. Mount and Pettitt had identical first and
second rounds with each shooting 66 in the opening round and finishing the
second round with 69. The UT golfers are tied for second overall in the
Junior Tino Weiss finished next for the Vols with a one-over-par 143. Weiss shot a 70 in the first round and finished his day with a 73. Weiss is currently tied for 22nd overall. Sophomore Ben Spickard rounds out the Vols lineup with a two-over-par 144. Spickard opened the day with a 70 and shot a 74 in the second round to finish the day tied for 27th.
Freshman Chris Paisley and sophomore Charles Ford are competing as individuals in the tournament. Paisley is tied with Spickard with a two-over-par 144. Ford shot an eight-over-par 150.
"I'm very pleased with everyone's performance," head coach Jim Kelson said. "Anytime you get a tournament record you have to be happy.
Only two other schools are currently under-par, Alabama and Georgia Southern. Alabama is in second at four-under-par and Georgia Southern is third at two-under-par.
The Crimson Tide's Mark Harrell and Matthew Swan are both tied for fourth in the tournament with a six-under-par 136. Georgia Southern's Jon David Kennedy and Arkansas's Matt Bortis are tired for sixth at five-under-par.
The final round is scheduled to take place Tuesday morning at Holston Hills with players teeing off at 8:30.
