Tennessee's quick start to the fall golf season took a slight tumble Saturday at the Rod Myers Invitational.
The Vols never found a rhythm and stand tied for sixth through 36 holes at the Duke University Golf Course in Durham, N.C. Garrick Porteous and Danny Keddie are 15th and 21st, respectively, but no other UT player made it inside the top 40.
Charlotte placed four players in the top 10 to grab the 36-hole lead at 3-under 573. Duke is second at 575, followed by Baylor at 580, Iowa at 582 and Tulsa at 589. Michigan surged late to tie the Vols at 19-over-par 595.
Iowa's Steven Ihm has the individual lead at 4-under 140.
Porteous in the morning round was even par through 16 holes before closing with a pair of bogeys. He was 2 under through 16 in the afternoon session when he again bogeyed Nos. 17 and 18. The senior shot 74-72--146 and is tied for 15th place at 2 over par.
Three in a Row
Porteous carded two birdies over his first 18 holes against four bogeys. He came back with five more birdies in the afternoon, including three in a row over holes 9-11, against five bogeys.
Keddie's even par 72 was Tennessee's low round in the morning. The sophomore played the afternoon 18 in 75 strokes and is tied for 21st place at 3 over par 147.
Keddie started slowly in both rounds. He was 2 over through three holes in the morning -- a double bogey at the third being the major culprit -- and 3 over through four holes in the afternoon. But he rallied over the middle holes in both rounds, highlighted in the morning by three birdies over a four-hole stretch between holes 8-11.
Marshall Talkington shot 73 for his first turn around the Duke course, Tennessee's second-lowest score of the opener despite his bogey-5 at the closing hole. The sophomore carded two birdies in the morning but just one in the afternoon, when he shot 80 thanks in part to a pair of double-bogeys. Talkington is tied for 40th place at 9-over 153.
Jay Vandeventer showed flashes of brilliance over the middle portion of both rounds. But the junior couldn't overcome a steady stream of bogeys -- 11 over the 36 holes -- and a pair of doubles. Vandeventer shot 78-76--154 and is tied for 47th at 10 over par.
Junior Rick Lamb is right there with Vandeventer. Debuting with the UT squad after a summer transfer from Santa Clara, Lamb shot a birdie-free 79 in the opener and then rallied for 75 after lunch to climb into that tie for 47th place at 10-over 154.
Competing as an individual, Darren Renwick shot 81-74 for an 11-over-par total of 155 that has the senior in 51st place. In the nightcap, Renwick rallied from an early 3-over scorecard to play his last 16 holes in 1 under par.
The tournament concludes with Sunday's 18 holes. Tennessee begins play at 8:50 a.m. from the No. 10 tee, alongside North Carolina and East Tennessee State. The weather forecast calls for mostly sunny skies and a high of 64, with calmer winds at 12 mph.
