Tennessee needs another furious finish if it's going to challenge for a second tournament title in as many starts.
The Vols stand in eighth place and trail first-place Illinois by 15 strokes through nearly two rounds of play at the Windon Memorial Classic in Glencoe, Ill. The second of two rounds scheduled for Sunday was suspended by darkness and resumes Monday morning, to be followed by the third and final round.
UT was in a tie for fifth after the first 18 holes, shooting a 15-over-par 299 in breezy conditions on the difficult Donald Ross-designed Skokie Country Club.
But UT has fallen off the pace in the second round, slipping three positions to the middle of the 15-team field.
In Sunday's late afternoon action, Wingardh stood at 1 under par through seven holes -- right in the thick of the individual leaderboard -- before dropping five strokes over his next four holes. The junior is at 4 over par for the round with three holes left to play.
Renwick also has three holes remaining and is at 2 over par. He bogeyed the first, and then had a roller-coaster stretch from holes 8-12 that saw the sophomore go birdie-bogey-bogey-birdie-bogey.
Walker has been the star of Round 2. The Greenbriar sophomore was 1 under par through 14 holes played, including birdies on the eighth and 13th holes, before a bogey and a triple-bogey pushed him to 3 over with two holes remaining.
Holmes also has a pair of holes to play and stands at plus-4. He carded two birdies in his opening 18 but has yet to find the range in Round 2 and has 12 pars over his 16 holes.
Cameron Lawrence is making his season debut and opened with a 7-over-par 78. The Brentwood junior has three holes left to play in his second round and is at 6 over par.
The Vols were no worse than second after either of the first two rounds of last month's Carpet Capital Collegiate. UT then blasted the competition over the final 18 holes to win by 12 strokes.
Monday's play resumes at 8:30 a.m. Central time. The groups will not be re-paired for the third round, and Tennessee begins again on holes 1-4 in a shotgun format with golfers from Northwestern and UC Davis.
Illinois enters Monday with a lead of three strokes over Michigan and four over Northwestern, thanks in part to Zach Barlow's hole-in-one in the second round on the 193-yard fifth hole.
Winds should be calmer Monday, with a forecast high in the low 60s under sunny skies. Live results will be available at UTsports.com and Golfstat.com.
