Vol Golfers Close Strong for 5th Place Finish at Gary Koch/Cleveland Golf Intercollegiate

TAMPA, Fla.-- The seventh-ranked Tennessee men's golf team battled back to finish fifth at the Gary Koch Cleveland Golf Intercollegiate at Old Memorial Golf Club (par 72, 7,078 yards). The Vols entered the final round of play in 10th place with a 304-301--605, but thanks to a 6-under-par 282 during the final round for a total of 887 they were able to improve five spots.

Senior David Skinns led the way for the Big Orange, posting his second top 10 finish in as many tournaments. Skinns fired a 73-77-67--217 to finish seventh. He previously finished tied for 10th at the Bank of Tennessee/Ridges Intercollegiate.

Standing five strokes back of Skinns in a tie for 19th was junior Lloyd Campbell and freshman Charlie Ford. Campbell improved his play by two strokes during the final round to finish with a 75-75-72--222, while Ford carded a 77-72-73--222.

Next for Tennessee was freshman Philip Pettitt in a tie for 45th. After struggling during the first two rounds with 79-78, Pettitt surged back with a 70 to finish the tournament with a 227. Rounding out the Volunteer contingent was senior John Scott Rattan with a 79-77-75--231, tying him for 59th.

The ninth-ranked Kentucky Wildcats took the team championship with a scorecard of 297-280-295--872. Eighteenth-ranked Georgia State finished second with a 300-283-294--877, while South Carolina rounded out the top three in third with a 296-286-297--879.

Mark Blakefield of Kentucky claimed the individual title after carding a 70-69-74--213, edging out first-round leader Stefan Wistorf of Central Florida who had a 68-73-74--215. There was a three-way tie for third between Jordan Dempsey of Mississippi, Matt Every of Florida, Alex Hamilton of South Carolina and Darren Baynes of Georgia with scores of 216.

The Vols return to action Oct. 18-19, when they host the Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions at Holston Hills Country Club.
