UT Golfers Tied for 8th After Day One of Carpet Capital Collegiate

ROCKY FACE, Ga. -- The 12th-ranked Tennessee men's golf team fired a 303 during the first round of play at the 2004 Carpet Capital Collegiate. The tournament is once again being played at the Farm Golf Club (par 72, 7,010 yards).

Leading the way for the Vols are junior Lloyd Campbell and freshman Philip Pettitt with scores of 74, tying them for 18th. Campbell opened play on the back nine with an even-par 36, but concluded the round on an up-and-down note, firing a 2-over-par 38 that included one birdie and three bogeys.

Pettitt also opened play on the back nine with a 2-over-par 38. He settled in for the final nine with six straight pars before a birdie and bogey to close the day with an even-par 36.

Senior David Skinns stood third in Vol scoring with a 77, to tie for 37th. After carding a birdie on the 12th hole, Skinns' struggled the remainder of the day, with four bogeys and a double bogey.

Fellow senior Ross McGowan is one stroke back of Skinns, tying for 46th with a 78. Senior John Scott Rattan rounded out the Vol scoring with an 81 to tie for 73rd.

Third-ranked Georgia leads the tournament with a 290. Fourth-ranked New Mexico is five strokes back in second with a 295, while top-ranked Georgia Tech (299), No. 17 Duke (300) No. 15 Wake Forest (301) and No. 5 Auburn (301) round out the top five.

Other Golfweek top 25 teams competing in the tournament include No. 12 Tennessee (303) and No. 21 Clemson (303) in a tie for eighth, No. 7 Southern California (306) and No. 6 Texas Christian (306) in a tie for 12th, No. 13 Augusta State (312) in 14th and No. 24 Texas Tech (314) in 15th.

Leading the individual portion of the tournament is David Denham of Georgia with a 3-under-par 69. Madalisto Muthiya of New Mexico stands second with 70, while there is a four-way tie for second between Mark Donnell of Vanderbilt, Patton Kizzire and Stuart Moore of Auburn and Nathan Smith of Duke with scores of 71.
