Big Aussie on Campus
Oliver Goss

Oliver Goss

Jan. 9, 2013

As the first day of classes start back on Rocky Top, the arrival of Australian golfer Oliver Goss is finally here.

The 18th ranked world amateur golfer and Perth, Australia native makes his long await debut in Knoxville, Tenn. Goss will first sport the Tennessee orange at the next men's golf match on Feb. 4.

"Oliver is the highest ranked player we have ever recruited to the University of Tennessee," UT head coach Jim Kelson said. "He certainly possesses all of the tools to excel in intercollegiate golf. We look forward to helping Oliver reach all of his goals and aspirations".

A Perth National Squad member, Goss is top 50 points leader in the World Amateur Golf Rankings before arriving in Knoxville. He is considered one of the finest young golfers in the world. He is the winner of the prestigious 2012 Western Australian Amateur.

Goss has compiled this extensive resume all while playing as an amateur player. He finished tied for second in the stroke play portion at the 2012 Australian Amateur and tied for fifth in the 2012 Malaysian Amateur Open.

Most recently, Goss was able to play with his childhood heroes and golf icons, Adam Scott and Graeme McDowell. After two rounds of group play, the professionals had this to say about Goss:

Adam Scott on Goss:
"He handled it pretty well out there," Scott said. "I am sure he would like to tighten it up a little bit off the tee but he knows how to get it around and that is a good asset to have at such a young age."

Graeme McDowell on Goss:
"He actually drove the ball awful today, put himself in a lot of trouble, but scrambled beautifully," McDowell said. "He's obviously got a power game - he's a big, strong lad - and he handled himself with a lot of class."
