The No. 10 Tennessee men’s golf team shot a final round 7-over-par 295 and finished tied for third as the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational concluded Tuesday at Sawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach. Fla. The Vols finished with a tournament scorecard of 291-300-295--886.
“We had a mediocre week overall as a team but there are some bright spots,” Tennessee coach Jim Kelson said. “We were competitive even though we didn’t necessarily have our best games. We proved we can win these golf tournaments if we are on our game.”
No. 2 Alabama fought off a push by No.3 UCLA to win the team championship by four strokes. The Crimson Tide finished the tournament 9 over par and has now won this tournament in back-to-back years. North Florida finished tied for third with the Volunteers. No. 3 Charlotte and No. 9 Florida finished tied for fifth.
Senior Charlie Ford was the top finisher for the Vols, jumping 16 spots to finish tied for 13th. Ford had the best final round for Tennessee, shooting a 2-under-par 70, finishing the tournament at 3 over par.
Philip Pettitt carded a 2-over-par 74 in the final round earning him a 15th-place finish.
Sophomore David Holmes finished the tournament in a tie for 21st after firing a 4-over-par 76.
Chris Paisley and Robin Wingardh rounded out the Tennessee lineup tied for 62nd. Paisley shot a 3-over-par 75 while Wingardh had a rough day with an 8-over-par 80. The pair finished the tournament at 15 over par.
The Vols will next travel to Westlake Village, Calif., for the USC Collegiate Invitational at North Ranch Country Club. Above rankings based on Golfweek/Sagrin team ratings.
