The Tennessee men's golf team looks to win back-to-back tournaments for the first time since the 2007-08 season. UT will stay in the Volunteer state where it will compete in the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate, beginning Monday, March 17.
After UT individuals competed in the tournament's inaugural year at the Sevierville Golf Club, the Vol golf team will return to play in the second annual Bobby Nichols in Sevierville, Tenn.
Last season, Brandon Rodgers captured the inaugural Bobby Nichols championship after carding a 36-hole total of 143 (-1).
"It's kind of a different mindset than last year because I was playing as an individual and this year we're competing for the team championship as well," Rodgers said. "I feel pretty confident since I won here last year but more importantly I feel confident in the rest of my teammates to play well, too. Winning back-to-back tournaments would be huge to set us up for the rest of the year and that's our goal right now."
The tournament will take place on the par-72 River Course, extending over 7,155 yards and featuring four par-5 and four par-6 holes. Monday will feature 36 holes of continuous play while Tuesday will feature the final 18 hols. Twelve teams, as well as four individuals from another university, will make up a field of over 65 participants.
The Volunteer starting five lineup:
Sophomore Grant Daugherty will also be competing at the Sawgrass Country Club as an individual.
Named in memory of legendary Tennessee Tech coach Bobby Nichols, the golf tournament enters its second year. Nichols took over the Tennessee Tech men's golf program in 1979 and was responsible for establishing the Golden Eagle women's team in 1986. A Hall of Famer for both Tennessee Tech and the OVC, he lost his battle with cancer in 2008 at the age of 66.
