The No. 9 Tennessee men’s golf team fired a 1-under-par 287 to move into a tie for fourth place with South Carolina after Saturday’s second day of the 2008 SEC Championships played at the Frederica Golf Club in St. Simons Island, Ga.
The Vols are now 7 over for the tournament and moved within five strokes of leader No. 2 Alabama and were the only team to finish the round under par. No. 1 Georgia remains in second at 5 over with No. 7 Florida in third at 6 over.
“We are very proud of the way our team played today,” head coach Jim Kelson said. “They had a very solid round and obviously Robin and David played exceptionally well and that was a big part of our day.”
“Our team has shown a lot of resilience throughout the year being able to come back after a rough start. We are proud to have put ourselves in a position to defend our title, so we are looking forward to a very competitive day tomorrow. It should be a great ending to a terrific championship.”
Knoxville native David Holmes is tied for second place with LSU’s Jarrod Barsamian after his second round 2-under-par 70. The pair is at 2 under for the tournament, only one stroke behind Alabama’s Joseph Sykora. Holmes played identical front and back nines, carding one bogey and two birdies on each.
Freshman Robin Wingardh moved into the top-10, ending the day tied for eighth place. The Sweden native fired a 2-under-par 70 in the second round. He finished the front nine even par and then used birdies on No. 14 and No. 18 to move under par.
Senior Charlie Ford improved his first round score four strokes with an even-par 72 on Saturday. The senior jumped 13 spots and is tied for 26th. Fellow senior Philip Pettitt finished with a 3-over-par 75 and is tied for 31st. The Murfreesboro native was hurt by three bogeys on the back nine after going 1 over on the front.
Chris Paisley rounded out the Tennessee lineup in a tie for 44th place after a 3-over-par 75. The junior played an inconsistent round with two eagles, one birdie, four bogeys and two double bogeys.
