Tennessee's late-season surge has drawn the attention of the Golf World/Nike Golf Coaches' Poll, which on Wednesday ranked the Vols for the first time all season.
UT enters the poll at No. 23 after finishing third at the recent SEC Championship in St. Simons Island, Ga. Six league members were ranked ahead of the Big Orange entering that event, but it was Tennessee that challenged Florida and Alabama -- both ranked among the nation's top five in all three major polls -- for the team title.
Tennessee also moved to 23rd in the latest Golf Week/Sagarin Ratings, and is ranked 33rd by Golfstat.com.
The team's spring surge has seen UT in six 2011 tournaments finish sixth, fifth, fourth, 10th and second in addition to the third-place SEC showing. The Vols' best showing in four fall competitions was fifth at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate.
Tennessee awaits word on NCAA regional selections, which take place May 9. If selected, the Vols would earn their 12th consecutive NCAA regional berth -- extending the school record -- and compete May 19-21 at one of six regional sites. The top five teams from each regional advance to the NCAA Men's Golf Championship, set for May 31-June 5 at Karsten Creek Golf Course in Stillwater, Okla.
