Porteous Named to All-SEC Second Team
Garrick Porteous

April 30, 2012

Tennessee's Garrick Porteous is playing the best golf of his senior season -- and perhaps his career.

Monday, Porteous saw that effort drawing notice when he was named to the 2012 Coaches All-SEC Second Team.

The Morpeth, England, native leads the Vols with a 72.55 scoring average and has five top-10 finishes this year, including the last three tournaments in succession. Porteous finished sixth at the Insperity Augusta State Invitational, third at the Yale Spring Opener and then seventh at the recent SEC Championship.

He started the 2011-12 season with a third-place result at the Carpet Capital Collegiate in September, and then secured his collegiate-best second to open the spring slate in February at the San Diego Intercollegiate.

"Garrick has had a really good, solid year for us," UT head coach Jim Kelson said. "He's been integral part of our program and he's progressed every year. He's been our captain this year and done a very good job with that.

"This is a really nice accomplishment for him to have, and it's nice to see his effort being recognized."

For the year, Porteous has had 28 of his 29 rounds count toward the team score. He has been named to England's Elite Squad and ranks as England's No. 1 amateur player.

Kelson and the Vols are awaiting word on their NCAA regional tournament destination. The selection announcement takes place May 7 at 6 p.m., and the regionals are scheduled for May 17-19.
