KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Former Tennessee golfers Michael Nagy, David Holmes and Jack Smith have advanced to U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying after finishing in the top five at Wednesday's local qualifying at Holston Hills Country Club.
Nagy finished first after carding an 8-under 64. Holmes tied for second at 6-under 66 and Smith placed fifth at 5-under 67. The top five finishers advanced to U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying. The trio of VFLs have also qualified for the 69th SunTrust State Open, which runs May 23-25 at Foxland Harbor Golf and Country Club in Gallatin, Tennessee.
Two Tennessee incoming freshmen also posted rounds under par. Chase Roswall shot 2-under 70 and Spencer Cross shot 1-under 71.
On May 9, VFL Chad Merzbacher earned alternate status after shooting a 71 at the local qualifyer at Mendakota Country Club in Mendota Heights, Minnesota.
Players who advanced out of local qualifying will compete in sectional qualifying, which will be conducted over 36 holes at 10 U.S. sites on June 5. For the 13th-consecutive year, Japan and England will also host international sectional qualifying in late May.
To be eligible, a player must have a Handicap Index® not exceeding 1.4, or be a professional.
From May 2-18, a total of 114 local qualifiers were conducted in 44 states and Canada for the 117th U.S. Open Championship, which runs June 15-18 at Erin Hills in Erin, Wisconsin.
