Murfreesboro, Tenn., native and rising University of Tennessee senior Philip Pettitt fired an 11-over-par 81 Thursday in the first round at the 2007 U.S. Open played at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa.
Pettitt started the day teeing off from the back nine. He was 2-over-par on the first two holes before double bogies on No. 12 and 16 put him at 7 over. Making the turn, he stood at nine over par.
Pettitt made up for a turbulent back nine with an excellent front nine. Birdies on Nos. 2 and 4 and pars on Nos. 3, 6, and 9 would help him finish the front only 2-over.
He is tied for 149th and is one of 12 amateurs competing in the Open.
The second round begins Friday morning at 8 a.m. Pettitt will tee off from No. 1 at 2:31 p.m. Eastern Time and is paired with Wareen Pineo of Palm Desert, Calif., and Jon Koskinen of Baraga, Mich.
Television coverage begins at 10 a.m. ET on ESPN, followed by a 3-5 p.m. telecast on NBC before ESPN concludes the day's action from 5-7 p.m. NBC then provides all day coverage on Saturday and Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
