UT Golfer Renwick Reaches British Amateur Match Play Quarterfinals

University of Tennessee rising sophomore Darren Renwick has reached the quarterfinals of the British Amateur Championship Match Play being held at the Formby Golf Club in Formby, England.

The first stage of the Championship involved 288 players each of whom played two rounds of 18 holes. The 64 lowest scores over the 36 holes and ties for 64th place compete in the match play stage of the Championship, which commenced on Wednesday. Each match consists of one round of 18 holes except the Final, which will be over 36 holes.

A member of the All-Southeastern Conference freshman team, Renwick, finished stroke play tied for 44th, with a two-day total of 145 with rounds of 72 and 73, respectively, good enough of three under par.

After receiving a first round bye and beginning match play Wednesday, Renwick defeated Pontus Widegren of Sweden, 2 up.

In the first of two matches today, he went on to down Tommy King of Sudbury, 7&5 in the third round. In the round of 16, it was American Steve Ziegler who fell victim in a close match to Renwick, 1 up.

Friday's action begins at 3:30 a.m. ET with Renwick facing Mark Hillson from Craigielaw. The winner advances to the 8 a.m. ET semifinals against the winner of Italian Matteo Manassero and hometown hero Tommy Fleetwood.

The 36-hole final is Saturday.
