On Friday, former Tennessee men's golfer Garrick Porteous advanced to the finals of the British Amateur Championship.
The British Am is being played in Deal, England at the Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club. The championship is conducted by match play settings. A few golfers at this week's British Am have described the competition as "a battle".
Porteous (@gaz_porteous) will take on Finland native and University of Texas golfer Toni Hakula for the British Am Championship. The two golfers will face off on Saturday, June 22 at 8:30 a.m. The winner of Saturday's 36-hole championship match will receive an automatic spot in next month's British Open, as well as invitations to the 2014 Masters and 2014 U.S. Open. Porteous will be looking to become the first Englishman to win the British Am since Gary Wolstenholme in 2003.
"Every one of us here at Tennessee is extremely proud of what Garrick has achieved," Tennessee head coach Jim Kelson said. "Garrick's achievement at the British Am is a testament to all of the hard work he has put in over the years."
Porteous' path to the British Am finals was rightfully earned. The former Vol had to defeat Castlerock's Aaron Kearney (3&2), Corhampton's Neil Raymond (2&1) in the quarter final, and incoming Stanford freshman Jim Liu (19th hole) in the semi final.
