Knoxville native Smith to play first college event

Knoxville native Smith to play first college event

Sep 6, 2013

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee men's golf team will begin its 16th season under the leadership of head coach Jim Kelson on Friday. The Vols will travel to Dalton, Ga., for the 25th annual Carpet Capital Collegiate at The Farm.

"We are excited to get the season started," Kelson said. "The competition at The Farm will be a great challenge for us and we look forward to playing it. We are also excited about the debut of our freshmen".

The 2013 Carpet Capital features six top-25 teams from the Golf World/Nike Preseason Poll as well as four teams that received votes. The Volunteers are one of those teams receiving votes (50).

The Vols will be led into The Farm by Golf World Preseason Top-50 golfer Oliver Goss. The Australian native will look to build off his impressive summer, which saw him finish runner-up at the U.S. Amateur.

Last season at the Carpet Captial, Tennessee finished eighth amidst equally tough competition. The Vols bright spot came in the form of now-sophomore Mike Nagy. The youngster finished tied for 11th in his first ever collegiate match.

This year Coach Kelson will start All-SEC first-teamer Goss, senior Marshall Talkington, sophomore Chad Merzbacher, junior Thomas Dunne, and freshman Jack Smith. In addition, Juan Carlos Serrano Guevara will play as an individual. Both Smith and Serrano Guevara will be competing in their first ever collegiate tournament.

Tennessee last won the Carpet Capital in 2009. The Vols were led by sophomore Darren Renwick, who won the individual title with a 210 (-6).

Other past Tennessee golf success at the Carpet Capital came in 1990 when Mike Sposa won the individual championship with a 209 (-7).
