When the Tennessee men’s golf team stepped on the course to face the No. 1 ranked Georiga Bulldogs Tuesday, their No. 27 ranking might have made it seem like this match was a lock for Georgia.
Tennessee had other plans.
Led by senior Philip Pettitt and Chris Paisley, the Volunteers played their way to a dominating 4-1 victory over Georgia in the winners consolation B final played at the Callaway Golf Collegiate Match Play Championships.
UCLA defeated Georgia Tech 4-1 to win the team competition played at Reynolds Plantation Country Club in Greensboro, Ga.
Senior Philip Pettitt defeated Georgia’s Adam Mitchell 2 and 1 to start the day. Pettitt and Mitchell were all-square for much of the match before Pettitt jumped ahead on the final six holes.
Junior Chris Paisley helped the Vols extend their lead, defeating Georgia’s Harris English 4 and 3. David Holmes secured a Tennessee victory with a dominating win over Georgia’s Rob Bennent, 6 and 5.
Freshman Robin Wingardh added a win over Georgia’s Hudson Swafford 4 and 2.
Georgia’s lone victory came as their Brian Harman defeated UT’s Charlie Ford 1 up through 18 holes.
Next the Volunteers will travel to Kahuku, Hawaii, for the Turtle Bay Intercollegiate played at the Turtle Bay Golf Resort, Nov. 5-7.
