SEC Individual Champions
|
| Tennessee has won 147 individual Southeastern Conference titles and 43 relay titles. Sixty-two different Volunteers have won individual conference championships.
Billy King, a diver, was the first Volunteer to win an SEC crown when he captured the one-meter diving championship in 1941 and 1942. After the program was revived in 1968, Tennessee proved significantly more successful at placing athletes atop the medal stand at conference meets. In 1968, Bill Ferry, a diver, became the first Volunteer of the modern era to win conference championships. The Vols also won the 400 medley relay in 1968. In 1973, the Vols won 14 conference titles, the most ever by a UT squad. Three Vols, Bill Ferry, Jim Kennedy and Jeremy Linn are among five SEC athletes to win the same event four seasons in a row. The longest streak of wins came in the 400 freestyle relay as UT won the event for 10 years. The most successful event for the Vols is the 100 backstroke. UT has claimed the 100 back title 16 times, with seven coming from the Gilliam family. The Gilliam family won 20 total SEC crowns.
