Jones Finishes Third at World Cup Trials

HUNTERSVILLE, NC. -- Tennessee diver Phillip Jones narrowly missed making the USA Diving World Cup team, finishing third in the 3-meter individual trials Sunday. Jones, needing to place second to make the team, finished eight points behind runner-up Justin Wilcox of Woodlands Diving Team with 1072.02 points. Volunteer teammate Jevon Tarantino also had a strong showing, finishing sixth with 977.22. Troy Dumais of the Centralized Training Center took the top spot in the competion with 1130.04.

"Both of our guys dove well," diving coach Dave Parrington said. "Phillip turned his ankle before competition and competed with a significant amout of pain. He missed his first two dives then came back strong, but didn't have enough to pull it out in the end."

Next up for the Vols is a dual at Georgia Jan. 24.
