Venditti led the pair with a 24th-place finish with 257.40 points on the 3-meter springboard. Rincon followed in 25th with 239.75. The top-three divers were all from the Southeastern Conference, led by SEC champion Chris Colwill of Georgia with 435.70.
"We struggled somewhat (Friday) with the entries," UT diving coach Dave Parrington said. "Ryan was very aggressive (Friday) as was John. Although we didn't place as high in the standings as we like, we made errors of effort and aggression and look to bounce back this weekend.
"Mostly what Ryan is working on is geared towards the base platform dives for Sunday," Parrington added. "John is looking to come out with his best performance possible on Saturday on 1-meter as is Ryan.
Thirteen qualifying spots will be filled from Zone B, the most of any of the five zones. Qualifying numbers are determined based on the previous results from the NCAA championships.
Either a top five on either springboard or a top three on the platform guarantees a spot at the NCAA championships. Divers earning an automatic spot on any board also qualify on other boards if they compete in those events at the zone qualifier.
Competition continues Saturday at noon Eastern time with the 1-meter
springboard competition. Sunday concludes the event with platform competition
beginning at 1 p.m.
