Sophomore Jevon Tarantino earned an automatic bid to the NCAA championships Friday evening at the NCAA Zone B qualifier with a second-place finish on the 3-meter board at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta.
"We came out of the 3-meter competition with a positive thought and frame of mind going into the NCAAs," UT diving coach Dave Parrington said. "The format of 38 divers will be similar to the NCAAs, and it gave us a good tune-up towards the NCAAs."
Tarantino finished with 607.95 points. Chris Colwill of Georgia won the 3-meter competition with 613.40. The Southeastern Conference was represented well for the second day in a row with seven of the top eight divers being from the conference. Miami's (Fla.) Miguel Velazquez was the lone diver not from the SEC in the top eight. Velazquez finished third in 602.00.
"I feel comfortable coming out of the competition," Tarantino said. "I just missed one dive, and I am definitely confident going into the NCAAs."
"The competition between Colwill and Velazquez was close, and I expect to see them up there with Jevon at nationals," Parrington said.
The top-five places in the 1- and 3-meter events are automatic qualifiers for the NCAAs. The remaining three spots from the zone will be filled according to overall performances from the weekend including the platform event with a total of 13 men from the competition earning NCAA spots.
