Vols Battle to Hold Top-10 Spot on Final Day of NCAAs

As the final day of the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships wraps up Saturday evening, the Tennessee Volunteers are fighting to maintain a top 10 spot. After the first two days of competition the Vols are in eighth with 119 points.

In the preliminaries of the 100 backstroke, UT senior Nolan Morrell placed 30th (1:44.60) and sophomore Michael Christy finished 32nd (1:45.31).

Co-captain Jonas Persson made the B-final of the 100 freestyle, placing 13th (42.66) in the prelims. All-America Barry Murphy placed 30th (43.31) and sophomore Mike DeRocco placed 40th (44.02).

Mr. Clutch Brad Craig just missed the B-final placing 18th (1:55.94) in the prelims of the 200 breaststroke.

The Vols had no entries in the 200 butterfly.

Freshmen divers Ryan Helms and Brent Sterling will both compete in the preliminaries of the platform diving event. The qualifying round began at 3 p.m. EST and results will be posted on divemeets.com Saturday afternoon at the conclusion of the event.

The Vol relay squad of Morrell, Persson, DeRocco and Murphy made the B-final of the 400 freestyle relay, finishing 10th (2:52.04).

The final rounds of competition will begin at 7 p.m. EST.
