MINNEAPOLIS - Tennessee freshman Jevon Tarantino finished third Friday on the three-meter board at the Speedo America's Cup Diving Championships in Minneapolis, earning the honor of representing the United States later this spring in international competition.
Tarantino finished with 985.65 points, 30 points behind runner-up Justin Wilcock. Troy Dumais won the competition with 1,115.46 points. The trio of Tarantino, Wilcock and Dumais will represent the United States May 6-10 in Woodlands, Texas at the USA Fina Grand Prix of Diving, which includes approximately 20 countries.
"I am very pleased with Jevon's performance this evening," UT diving coach Dave Parrington said. "Jevon dove too conservatively this morning in the preliminary round, but he came out this evening and really turned it up."
The meet was scored the same way the Olympic Trials are scored with the preliminary, semifinal and finals scores added together to form your total score. A total of 17 dives are scored in this format.
Junior Phillip Jones and Tarantino are both qualified individually for the Olympic Trials this summer. Jones and Tarantino are waiting to find out if their showing in the synchronized competition this week will garner them a shot at the Olympic Trials.
