Aqua Vols Head West for NCAA Championships

The seventh-ranked Tennessee men’s swimming and diving team turns to the final chapter of the 2007-08 season on Thursday, as the Volunteers trek to Federal Way, Wash. for the 2007-08 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. The preliminaries begin at noon and the finals follow at 7 (All times in Pacific Time Zone).

“After four and a half weeks of preparation and after our SEC Championships, we’re pleased to report that the 11 swimmers here representing Tennessee are healthy and excited to start the competition tomorrow,” UT head coach John Trembley said.

Last year’s NCAA championships saw the Vols place 11th, after the team fell just three points short of a top-10 finish. The meet marked UT head coach John Trembley’s 20th consecutive top-20 finish at the NCAAs.

“Based on pre-competition seedings, we hope to improve on our team finish of last year,” Trembley said.

The Vols enter the meet with top seeds in several events. The most notable are the 400 and 800 freestyle relays which both rank third among teams at the meet and Jonas Persson’s fourth-seed in the 200 freestyle.

“We lose only two seniors after this meet and we have recruited well up to this point,” Trembley said. “The short-term and long-term optimism is high. That being said, the athletes know that on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, they will have to be at their best.”
