Scholar- Athlete of the Month
Edamerica and the University of Tennessee named Jevon Tarantino Edamerica Athlete of the Month and Brett Frykberg Edamerica Scholar-Athlete of the Month for March.
Trarntino recently completed his first season with the Tennessee swimming and diving team, and it was a season he's not likely to forget. The freshman from Clearwater, Fla., won the SEC title in the 1-meter springboard competition. At the NCAA Zone B Diving Qualifier in Athens, Ga., March 12-14, he secured qualifying spots in all three boards while taking top honors in the 1-meter and 3-meter competitions.
At the NCAA Championships March 25 in Long Island, N.Y., Tarantino kicked off the meet in strong fashion when he took the 1-meter NCAA championship. His score of 388.65 sealed the deal and helped the Vols to an eighth-place finish nationally. Tarantino also finished ninth on the 3-meter board.
"I wanted this (title) so bad, and it really feels great," Tarantino said after the meet. "There was a lot of pressure on me coming in as a freshman, and I wasn't doing too well during the dual-meet season. I just brought it all back together here at the end to finish the season. My heart was really in it."
Frykberg was named Edamerica Scholar-Athlete of the Month for March. The junior track and field competitor hails from Jacksonville, Fla., and is furthering his education in biochemistry and cellular and molecular biology.
Despite missing last season because of injury, Frykberg has made up ground as a high jumper and javelin thrower for the Vols. During the indoor season, Frykberg finished third in the high jump at the SEC Indoor Championships with a height of 7-1 ¾. In the final weekend of March, he won the high jump at the Raleigh Relays.
Frykberg received the James Snow Award in 2001 as the team's most outstanding
